Don't Drink That Tea | St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub

It's been a while since my last post and I hope it is still not too late to wish 'Happy Independence Day, Malaysia!' to my beloved country - Malaysia.

So today's post is reviewing on one of the St. Ives new arrival products, in Malaysia - a green tea facial scrub. The brand is famous with some water soluble cleansers and facial scrubs that actually works on almost every skin type.

Unlike the other off-day, I spent my long weekend browsing through and sightseeing at some local drugstores i.e Watsons and Guardian Pharmacy just to check if they have so called 'Merdeka Special Sale' and yes, they have but unfortunately the items on sale is not attracting me. My eyes stopped by at the cleansers section, attracting me to read more on some St. Ives products. I remember I am so in love with their Invigorating Apricot Scrub; however at this age, I am no longer into the harsh and big grains particles to exfoliate my face. I am looking for a fine grain that is more gentle on skin, then I found this Green Tea Scrub.

At first, I was a bit skeptical to bag this in but my friend convinced me to get one to try - like she said, "if we don't buy how to know whether it's good or not. After all, drugstore items did not offer any samples." Okay, I decided to give a try. I also found the cleanser version next to this scrub - Wow! They have green tea cleanser too? Sweet! Shall I take both or only the scrub? Haha.. Guess what? I bagged in both, the scrub and the cleanser. Sigh!

Okay, let's talk about the scrub, it has 1% Salicylic Acid as an active ingredient, and stated on the tube it can be used daily but personally, I do not scrub my face everyday since I find it unnecessary as it a bit harsh and abrasive to scrub frequently especially on my cheek area. The product claims, this is a dermatologist tested scrub that can actually help to clear and soothe your skin as well as to reduce the redness. An active blemish-fighting ingredient fights the flare-ups, while 100% natural exfoliants encourage healthier and clearer skin.

Here are the ingredients list,

Active: Salicylic Acid (1%), Other: Water, Hydrated Silica, Potassium Laureth Phosphate, Glycerin, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate, Polyacrylate-1 Crosspolymer, Citric Acid, Glycereth-18 Ethylhexanoate, Salicylic Acid, Kaolin, Disodium 2-Sulfonate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium Extract, Olive Leaf Extract, Ascophyllum Nodosum Extract, Alteromonas Ferment Extract, Yeast Extract, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters, PPG-2 Methyl Ether, Fragrance, Glycereth-18, Phenethyl Alcohol, Methylisothiazolinone, Yellow 5, Red 4, Red 33, Blue 1

The texture of this scrub is green color cream-like with micro breads to scrub off the skin. It has a very pleasant smell that may or may not tolerate to the sensitive skin beauties. Except for the colors, the creamy texture with micro beads particle reminds me of Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream Rinse Off Formula. I personally think this is a cheaper alternative to Clinique if you're looking for a decent and gentle daily facial scrub for oily skin - with some extra ingredient added - Salicylic Acid.

Honestly, I found that the scrub neither actually really helps in clearing the blackheads nor reducing or calm the breakouts. What it does to my skin, it's only exfoliates the top layer of my skin, removing some dry patches gently. I also think the Salicylic Acid is best to leave to on the skin but you don't want to leave the scrub on your skin right? So it is mostly wasted as this is a rinse off product. But comparing to the Invigorating Apricot Scrub that is a bit rugged, this does a good job to exfoliate the skin without being too harsh and it leaves the skin smooth and supple.

So what I did, I simply put the products on my skin, top more on the breakout areas (if any - yes, during the bad skin day) and leave it for few minutes, while doing my other routines i.e. brushing my teeth etc. Once I finished other routines; except the breakout areas - I gently massage the scrub left on my face, (carefully avoid the breakout areas because it hurts!) and rinse off. By doing that also did not help much. But I do noticed it calms the redness. So, as long as you don't expect this to clear up your skin, it is a good option for normal to oily skin. It may or may not suitable for dry skin beauties as the active ingredient may dry out the skin a little bit - may be you think moisturizer could solve the problem, why not trying?

My rating on this product is pretty neutral, neither I like it nor hate it. Some pros that I think fair to be highlighted is that this product is paraben free, oil-free, hypoallergenic and sulfate free. It is made of 100% natural extracts which is the green tea and it comes in a tube for ease of use. Personally, I will not repurchase it, however, this is a good and cheaper alternative as a gentle exfoliator due to its micro beads for normal and oily skin types. Retail for RM21.90 at Guardian Pharmacy.
